Constituency committees
Constituency committees
The party associations in each constituency collaborate through a platform known as the constituency association, except in Reykjavík where this platform is called the constituency association for the north and south Reykjavík constituencies. The constituency associations oversee and/or take the initiative for party activities within the constituency. Their main focus is on common issues such as policy development regarding constituency matters, publication of party newsletters in the constituency, communication with party leadership and the parliamentary group, and similar matters. The chairpersons of the constituency associations hold seats in the party's national council.
The constituency associations are responsible for the nominations for the Alþingi in their constituency, i.e., they decide what method shall be used for selecting candidates, oversee its implementation, and formally present the list. They are then responsible for organizing and running the election campaign in their area. The associations hold constituency meetings in the spring, before 15 April each year. Delegates from the party in the constituency and representatives from the member associations of the federation (usually one for every 10 members) attend. There, the work of the past year is reviewed, plans are laid for the following year, and resolutions are made regarding constituency matters or the general political situation. Representatives are also elected to the party's central board for one year at a time. The number of representatives depends on the number of party members in the constituency.
