Fundamental Policy of the Progressive Party
The Progressive Party is a liberal social democracy party that works towards constant improvements in society and solving common societal issues based on cooperation and equality. It guards the political, economic, and cultural independence of Icelanders, based on democracy, parliamentary procedure, and legal security. The Progressive policy puts people and their welfare at the forefront.
I. Social Structure
We want to continue building a society on the core values of democracy, personal freedom, equality, prosperity, and social responsibility.
II. Human Rights
We fight for human rights, respect for the individual and the family. We reject any form of discrimination that distinguishes people, e.g., by race, gender, language, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, sex characteristics, gender identity, domicile, or political beliefs. We will always defend freedom of opinion and expression, freedom of religion, and the sanctity of private life.
III. Equality
We place human worth above material value and want everyone to have the same right to education, development, basic living standards, and natural resources, regardless of origin, health, and economic status.
IV. Human Resources
We want to strengthen human resources by providing every individual with stimulation and opportunities to grow and develop in play and work and to achieve happiness. We aim for a society of tolerance and broad-mindedness so that the diversity of national life and individuals can be enjoyed.
V. Governance
We want the nation to hold the supreme decision-making power and that the holders of power govern only on its behalf. We work diligently towards just governance, open administration practices, power distribution, and ensuring everyone has a voice. Just proceedings in courts and access to them should always be guaranteed.
VI. Economy
We want to build the nation's economy on a market economy of private enterprise and cooperative operations so that the initiative of individuals and their organizations is fully realised. The growth of the economy needs to be based on sustainability and innovation.
VII. The International Community
We have strong obligations regarding cooperation with other nations to solve common tasks such as collaboration on sustainable development and actions against climate change. We want our participation in international relations to be based on recognition of nations' rights to independence and self-determination.
VIII. Natural Resources
We put sustainable development at the forefront and the sensible use of the earth's resources that do not harm the interests of future generations. We believe that all domestic natural resources should unquestionably be under Icelandic control.
IX. Living Conditions
We consider it a fundamental right for people to be able to choose their residence as they wish. Efficient transportation, comprehensive communications, diverse job opportunities, and varied offerings in education, culture, and health services are factors that equalize living conditions.
X. Politics
We build on a liberal ideology and consider it best to achieve results through cooperation of diverse forces and interests based on moderation and honesty.
